Abstract:

In L'Évangile selon Pilate, Éric-Emmanuel Schmitt weaves together the religious, the philosophical, the historical, the political and the literary, crossing time from the origins of Christianity, to propose his own version of the Gospel. For him, the act of writing and creating is a remarkable example of transgression for and within transmission, and also a fine demonstration of transmission through transgression. Indeed, his creative freedom and abundant imagination give his book a dynamism that is part and parcel of a filiation made up of unexpected breaks and daring departures. While he has made his protagonists active agents, fully involved in the complexity of their times, he, for his part, maintains the thread of evolution to offer totally modern perspectives. His aim is to show that the individual is found in the universal, and that the collective meets the personal for a different way of thinking about humanity.
