Abstract:

This study examined the problems and prospects of internal party democracy as it affect democraticconsolidation in Nigeria. At the heart of this study is the conviction that democratic consolidation isheavily dependent upon vibrant and well-functioning political parties. Without the existence ofpolitical parties as one of the indicators of democratic consolidation, a political system cannot beclassified as democratic. The study argues that sustained poor political leadership among others hasseriously threatened the survival of democratic consolidation in Nigeria. The overall finding is thatthe degree of internal democracy of political parties in Nigeria is weak, due to the electoral parties’weak organizations, party leadership; intra-party conflicts and lack of intra-party democracy; poorrelations between political parties-mutual suspicion and conflict; policy/programme development; andthe management and administration of the internal affairs of the party. The study suggests that it isimperative to revived political parties democracy through several means as was recommended in thisstudy.
