Abstract:

Since the early stages of their presence in North Africa, the Romans pursued dominance over the region, as seen through literary sources, archaeological sites, and material remains, like Latin inscriptions. Caesarean Mauretania, a vast African province with numerous tribes opposed to foreign presence, became a central focus of Roman authority. To counter this resistance, the Romans implemented defensive lines known as limes, a series of structures aiding control over the province. Sites like Rapidum (now Sour Djawab) and Ozia (now Sour El-Ghozlane) initially served as military outposts within the southeastern defensive line, playing a significant military role. Over time, they transformed into social centers, with their strategic importance fostering a road network linking them to key urban and military hubs.
