Abstract:

The findings of this study, which aims to examine the official marriages in Turkey in the 2001-2022 period, geographically, are as follows: During the specified period, the crude marriage rate of the country decreased in general. In this decrease process, there are 3 periods in which deep decreases are experienced. Two of these periods corresponded to a period of economic crises in the country, and the third to a time period when the Covid-19 pandemic and economic crisis were experienced together. Therefore, it is possible to say that the marriage rates in Turkey have decreased significantly during the periods of economic crises. In such periods, while TL Turkish Lira loses value rapidly, excessive increases in the value of gold, which is the indispensable jewellery for weddings, and furniture and white goods, the prices of which are determined by foreign exchange, negatively affect the marriage dreams of citizens whose income is TL. Again, in relation to this, among the common problems of the provinces where the age at first marriage is high are the cost of living and the difficulty of living. The fact that the provinces in question receive immigration from their surroundings, the country in general or from foreign countries has a significant impact on this. As a matter of fact, in provinces exposed to immigration in this way, unemployment rates increase as well as the prices of rental or sale houses, depending on the demand, and this leads to an increase in the age at first marriage.
