Abstract:

As I Remember is a digital memory application consisting of two independent parts. The first part of the application, the album, contains digital illustrations made via photo-painting technique on family photographs; the second part, the display cabinet, contains of 3D silhouettes of various objects and their digital versions made via watercolor. The study utilizes image-based research through photography, illustration and an informal interview as a qualitative research technique. In addition to the visuals, the application, whose outputs are merged in Unity, includes interactivity that allows photos to be turned and cabinet doorsdrawers to be opened, and auditory elements that are activated by the sound of the parents and television. This approach collects the material culture of household objects into a curated selection, embodying the connotation of a mini-museum. Thus, performative memoriesrecreated through speaking and observingare established in a space open to continuous experience, offering alternative ways of knowing and remembering. In this context, this two-layered application project, As I Remember is a digital autobiography experiment presented to feed the same collective memory with the narrative that created from different elements such as the soundsilent components, photographsdisplay cabinet objects and the other ethnic, class, gender and religious identities encompassing the family.
