Abstract:

The main reason for the emergence of this study is the curiosity to identify similarities in the poems of poets who lived in different geographies of the same period. This article, written in the field of Turkish Islamic Literature, aims to identify similarities and affinities through comparison and contrast, essentially from an intertextuality perspective. When we look at Eastern literature -specifically Ottoman literature- and Western literature -specifically English literature- within the framework of the expressions classical, ancient or old, Nabi from Urfa and Shakespeare from Stratford-upon-Avon, who lived in the same period, attract attention with their competence in the field of literature. Although Shakespeare is mostly known for his playwrighting, he makes his poetry felt even in his playwrights. So much so that T.S. Eliot said that a person watching Hamlet for the first time would not be able to distinguish whether the speeches were in verse or prose. This study focuses on similar subjects and expressions in the poems of Nabi and Shakespeare, who lived in the same period -very likely- and were unaware of each other. Thus, it has been tried to show that artists of the same period, in different parts of the world, could draw the same picture with different pens and different inks. The article consists of 7 titles in total, excluding the introduction and conclusion sections. These titles are, respectively, Inadequacy of Poetry, Because of the Beloved, Praise for Poetry, Criticism of the PoetPoetry, Poetics, Meaning and NewDifferent Expression. In the introduction, it is mentioned how the names Shakespeare and Nabi were determined and how poems with fundamentally different forms, shapes and perspectives can show similarities. In the title of Inadequacy of Poetry, the idea that the poet is sometimes inadequate in conveying the emotions of the poem is processed and with examples from both poets, it is mentioned that rather than the inadequacy of the poems, their own emotions are indescribable. Under the title Because of the Beloved, the existence of every beautiful reason is attributed to the beloved. In Praise of Poetry, it is mentioned that the poet and poetry are inclined to praise, and with the examples given, it is shown to what extent the two poets praise their own poems and poetic skills. In the Criticism of the PoetPoetry section, it is emphasized that the poets do not like poems other than their own; thus, it is stated that they indicate that their own poems are flawless. In the title Poetics, it is tried to give the views of both poets on poetry. In the meaning section, it is mentioned how important meaning is in poetry and the importance that the two poets give to meaning is mentioned. In the last heading NewDifferent Expression, the poets efforts for originality are mentioned. These headings and the analyses under these headings constituted the content for the Conclusion; in the Conclusion section, it was tried to show that two people who have different languages, live in different places and most importantly look at the world from different perspectives can meet in the universality of literature.

Şiirin Kifayetsizliği başlığında, bazı zamanlarda şiirin şairin duygularını aktarmada yetersiz kaldığı düşüncesi işlenmiş ve her iki şairden getirilen örneklerle, şiirlerin yetersizliğinden ziyade kendi duygularının anlatılamaz nitelikte olduğundan söz edilmiştir. Sevgiliden Dolayı başlığı altında, her güzel sebebin varlığının sevgiliye bağlanışı ele alınmıştır.
