Abstract:

This article examines the historical development of folklore magazines in Turkey and the central role of local magazines in preserving and transmitting folk culture, using the example of Çağrı magazine. Magazine publishing has played a significant role throughout the history of Turkish printing, from its inception to the present day. Under the influence of nationalist movements, interest in folklore increased, and this interest shaped magazine publishing activities. It appears that compilation activities, considered the first step in folklore research, were accelerated through various local magazines. Local magazines have played a significant role in the fields of culture, art, and literature, passing on all elements of folk culture to future generations. Çağrı magazine, the focus of this study, was launched in Konya in 1957 under the leadership of Feyzi Halıcı. It is one of the local magazines that has recently published 62 volumes and 744 issues. Having experienced a relatively long publication period for a local magazine, Çağrı has long been one of the most important magazines publishing various articles, especially compilations on Turkish folk culture. Although Çağrı began publication in 1957, this study examined folklore articles published in the journal over a 23-year period, from 1993 to 2016. The primary reason for this limitation was to narrow the scope of the study and create more manageable data. The closer dates to the present day, during the Republican era, provided an opportunity to evaluate contemporary approaches to folklore.
