Abstract:

This research aims to address the phenomenon of Latin American Orientalism between documentation and myth in three recent works from Latin America. These works represent different views of writers who follow diverse literary trends from different countries and from different cultural perspectives. The first work is the collection of a thousandth story by the Argentine writer Jorge Luis Borges (1899-1986), the second work is the African play by the Argentine writer of German origin Roberto Arlt (1900-1942), and the third and last work is hundred years of isolation by the Colombian Nobel laureate writer Gabriel Garcia Marquez (1927- 2014).
The three authors showed a prominent interest in the Arab and Islamic element in the works mentioned where the East with its elements is at the forefront of the collection of stories and theatres and shows the strong features of this Arab representation of Marquez in his narrative text. However, the views on the elements of Orientalism varied from one author to another, which in turn offered different visions of the outlook of the Eastern world. In the collection of a Thousand, Borges presents an in-depth vision that demonstrates his close knowledge of Arab and Islamic culture. He sets out in his story, “The objective of Ibn Rushd”. He presents the pre-Islamic poetry, the philosophy of Ibn Rushd, his study, and his commentary on Aristotle. In his narrative text, he focuses on various details dealing with the Arab and Islamic world. However, the presentation presented by the Argentine writer is not without a dodge that makes the recipient of the text confused between the intention of the narrator, as his encyclopaedic view of the East with its Arabic and Islamic details contradicts some points that seem detrimental to the extent that affects the value of Arab and Islamic civilization.
On the other hand, Roberto Arlt's African play reflects a gloomy picture of the Arab-Islamic community through the image he presents to this community in the Arab Maghreb. This is the country that Arlt has already visited and it is a reflection of the values of backwardness and barbarism, as well as the excessive distortion of the Arab character that makes up this society.
The three texts reflected a variety of views of the Eastern and Arab-Islamic element in a variety of Latin American writers. There was an apparent disparity in the presentation of this society by its philosophy, history and diverse elements of human beings and heritage. The intention of this proposition remained swinging from one writer to another between entrenching and documenting a particular image and creating the myth so that the textual interpretation between these two dimensions turns into the space of Orientalism.
