Abstract:

During history, different meanings have been attached to the phenomenon "individuality” by different cultures. However, it has always retained its basic sense, the self implementation of the individual and his wish of being a remarkable member of the society. Orhan Pamuk writes the Story of the 16th century Ottoman painters and of painting in “My name is Red” within the framework of this individuality. He discusses the relations and conflicts among society, art, politics and the individual in the Ottoman realm. Thus, the author successfully introduces to the reader the tensions resulting from these relations from a critical perspective. The purpose of this study is to show how Pamuk connected the historical events and individuality to create a work of art with an aesthetic interpretation.
