Abstract:

This article examines the novels of Mahi Binebine through the concept of paratopy, borrowed from Dominique Maingueneau, in order to analyze the articulation between social critique and aesthetic modernity in contemporary Moroccan literature. The study adopts a theoretical and analytical perspective that explores the writer’s liminal position, situated at the boundary between belonging and exclusion. The corpus includes the novels Rue du pardon, Le sommeil de l’esclave, Pollens, and Cannibales, in which social marginality constitutes a central motif. The analysis highlights three dimensions of paratopy: physical, through peripheral spaces; psychological, reflected in the characters’ identity in-betweenness; and narrative, through a fragmented and polyphonic style of writing. The findings show that this paratopic configuration enables Binebine to denounce the illusions of social modernity while simultaneously experimenting with a distinctly modern form. Thus, paratopy emerges as a fundamental critical and aesthetic tool, generating an anti-modern paradox in which marginality becomes a privileged space for creation and symbolic resistance.
