Abstract:

Excavations which began in Laodikeia in 2003, one of the most important cities of Phrygia located 6 km northeast of Denizli province today, provided significant data on ancient glass art and craftsmanship. Alongside rare imported form groups from the Hellenistic Period, the density of finds from the Middle and Late Imperial Periods, and tangible data on Late Antique glass production, demonstrate the place and importance of the citys glass repertoire within the region. Glass oil lamps found in Laodikeia rank among the most encountered groups in both public and civil areas due to their being the most effective lighting products of daily life. Additionally, the citys significance as one of the important centers of Christianity in Late Antiquity, hosting the Laodikeia Church mentioned in the Bible as one of the Seven Churches, and the symbolic meanings attributed to light with the new religion, have influenced the density of finds of glass oil lamps within the city. Polycandilia, lamp hangers, and wick holders found in the excavations also provide important data on the use of lamps. The results indicate that glass oil lamps were effectively used for lighting from the early 4th century AD until the abandonment of the city in the 7th century AD.
