Abstract:

What is fundamental in history is not the narrative action but the notions that are generated and susceptible for generalization. A historiographer does not entertain the narration of events per se; but he or she pursues in them lessons and situations. Also, what is entertained could be any device that is derived from history; it is used to elaborate, that is to say, a public figure in order to identify her or his success or failure, and triumph or defeat. This is usually classified as an autobiographical text, as the autobiographies of eminent figures of history, literature, and politics. It is possible to situate This is the Andalusian, a novel by the Moroccan writer Salim Himayyish, in the context that brings together autobiography and history. The novel not only achieves such a reconciliation, but also reconstructs the relationships between autobiography and history; it gathers together constraints of fictional aesthetics that do not allow us to repudiate elements of time-fixation, individual or collective, autobiographical data, classifications and judgments, which formulate a particular vision. The reader is provided with a number of marginal elements that permit her/him to interpret the strands of the protagonist, Ibn Sab'in, an Adalusian philosopher, and determine his intellectual value and position, as a figure who is included in the list of eminent philosophers and mystics. Half of the judgments are in favor of his intellect and half of them are not.
