Abstract:

In philosophy, the essence is considered the source that constitutes the core of its matter, let alone the indications that come over the body. The theory of the essence is one of the important theories that occupied the thinkers through ages. Every thinker has a unique viewpoint; hence, various views on the theory appeared as a result. The theory of essence or monads; the indivisible part as identified by Leibniz, was not pertinent to the modern age but as old as the philosophical thinking. Philosophers have handled it along ages. For the Greek philosophers, the idea of essence goes back to Aristotle to whom we are indebted for the large number of ideas and philosophical terms he bestowed upon humanity. For Aristotle, the essence is the entity upon which a certain individual relies. That entity remains constant even if all the outer properties that distinguish the volume and relationships of this individual change. A lot of discussions around this Aristotelian idea of the essence took place in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Philosophers split into two divisions towards the idea of essence; one supported the idea and the other rejected it. The experimentalists rejected the idea and tried to ignore it. Hume for example said it was illusion because the essence is a collection of attributes. The scholars defended the idea because it represented a basic point in their philosophical ideology. The rationalists such as Descartes and Spinoza rejected the idea of the essence, but they reproduced it in another modified image. While Descartes believed in two created essences; thinking and extension in addition to the absolute essence or Allah, Spinoza believed in an infinite essence that could be called Allah or nature. As for Leibniz, the topic of this research, he followed a different terrain where he observed the idea of essence and turned it into the axis of his philosophy. In his idea of the essence, Leibniz collected ancient elements from the philosophical heritage besides his own ideas, which led him to a new and original conception. He termed it as the monads, which is handled in detail in this research. Concerning essence in the Islamic thought; the idea of the essence of the individual or the idea of the integral part is considered the basis of all natural and divine issues for the Muslim thinkers. The end of talking about the essence of the individual was to prove the eternity and preexistence of Allah, and the existence of the world.
