Abstract:

Tlemcen distinguished itself as a historic capital central to prominent civilizations over the centuries, fostering an architectural and cultural renaissance that established the independent Zayyanid court's legitimacy. Within this unique setting, several learned families excelled in Islamic scholarship, achieving both social prestige and intellectual authority. This study investigates the scholarly contributions of the Ibn Zaghū Al-Maghrawī family of Tlemcen, emphasizing their role in shaping the intellectual and cultural identity of western Algerian cities. Using a historical-analytical approach, we examined primary sources and documents illustrating their achievements in teaching multiple disciplines, including language, literature, jurisprudence, and Hadith, contributing significantly to Tlemcen's scholarly life. Findings reveal that the Ibn Zaghū family was not only committed to academic scholarship but also prominent in authoring works, issuing fatwas, and holding judicial positions. This study thereby contributes to reviving local heritage, underlining the family’s extensive impact on intellectual and cultural life in Tlemcen.
