Abstract:

Kavak Square has a unique location in Trabzon as a historical sports square and reinforced this important task with the construction of Hüseyin Avni Aker Stadium in the west. However, the demolition of the stadium in 2018 due to its age and inadequacy disrupted the historical sports identity of Kavak Square, which had served the city for 66 years. The transformation project implemented in the square initiated the social reproduction process in the context of the history and memory of the area. The study focuses on the spatial production process of Kavak Square and the Stadium in the historical context, and adopts a spatial analytical approach through Lefebvres spatial triad theory as a method. A multi-layered photographic reading supports the historical development of Kavak Square, its importance for the city and the process from the construction of Hüseyin Avni Aker Stadium to its destruction. The demolition process from 2012, when rumors of demolition broke out, to 2021, when the first phase of the conversion project was completed, is discussed in the historical, social, political and spatial context with a critical point of view through the discourses and projects produced on the field in the electronic newspaper news that took place in the national and local press. As a result, it is observed that the dialectical relation of the perceived, designed and lived space is broken with the unstable planning process in the production of the space designed in the transformation project of Kavak Square, which is a social space, ignoring the historical value of the spatial practice and space of representation.
