Abstract:

To examine the economic determinants of the quality of life in Algeria, this study has developed an econometric model investigating the long and short run effect of economic growth, trade openness, inflation rate and the unemployment on Algeria’s human development index ( HDI) as a measure of the standard living and poverty alleviation .
The results of the autoregressive distribute lag (ARDL) approach for cointegration did not differ significantly from those of previous studies, it revealed that economic growth positively affects the quality of life in the short and long term in contrast to openness, inflation and unemployment which have negative impact on HDI. These findings have been confirmed through alternative methods indicating that these variables contribute significantly to the deterioration Algerian citizen's standard of living.
