Abstract:

A promise represents a need or desire, such as grace or favor sought by humans, while a term implies obligatory waiting and patience. If the promise comes from the Creator, it is Divine and true; if it comes from humans, it is often mundane and false. In classical Turkish poetry, promises from the beloved inspire hope in the lover but are often deferred and unfulfilled. Promises made by statesmen, religious figures, and fate are similarly seen as false. The words promise and term are used in phrases like promise of tomorrow, promise of reunion and promise of seeing the beloved, as well as in expressions like vad-i kemmûn promise for cumin plants to germinate and vad-i Urkûb promise likened to Urkûb, a person notorious for falsehood, representing promises with symbolic value.

Vaat ve vade kelimeleri, çoğunlukla vad-i ferdâ, vad-i visâl, vad-i dîdâr, vade-i muhâl, vade-i dürûğ...vb. gibi tamlamalar etrafında kullanılmıştır. Ayrıca insanların yetiştirdikleri kimyon bitkisine yeşermesi için vaatte bulunmaları ile vad-i kemmûn, yalancılığıyla meşhur olmuş bir kişi olan Urkûba teşbihle de vad-i Urkûb ifadeleri sembolik değeri olan vaatler olarak kabul edilebilir.
