Abstract:

This research aims to collect information about the origins of modern Turkish names and naming rituals. The study seeks to answer the following questions: Who gave the young peoples names? Why did they choose those specific names? Which names derive from family traditions? What types of naming ceremonies were held? What are peoples thoughts on their given names? The sample of the research consists of 416 students studying at different universities selected by the purposive sampling method. A questionnaire was used as a data collection tool in the research. A total of 416 students, 132 men, and 284 women, participated in the research. Men participated with 88 different names, while 156 different names were collected from the female participants. Fifty percent of the male participants names are thought to have religious origins. When it comes to the origins of womens names, a Quranic concept ranks first, names that symbolize an emotion or a characteristic of the personality rank second, and names that were popular during the time rank third. It is observed that women differ from men in terms of name sources. Particularly for women, new names are being created by appending suffixes to traditional names.
