Abstract:

Aim: This study aimed to examine the medical work Hıfzu’l-Ebdān (min Tagayyurāti Mizāci’lİnsān) written by physician Atūfī from the Bāyezīd II period in order to shed light on the contemporaneous approaches to medicine and health protection.

Materials and Methods: The hifzissihha (health protection) literature in the Islamic medical tradition and Ottoman State was discussed by translating the work from Arabic into Turkish.

Results: In the work the core section addressing health protection is the qasida composed of 28 couplets, which describes and emphasizes the importance of hifzissihha. This was followed by a discussion of various topics, including food, sleep, sexual intercourse, dressing, and treatment.

Discussion and Conclusion: Among historical medical works those dealing with health protection are of great importance because they were aimed at use by broad masses of people. These works were written in a simple language easily understandable to the public for convenience in application. The Arabic qasida examined also contains practical recommendations on health protection. Finally, at the end of the text Atūfī appears to have attempted to confirm his opinions by means of quotations from Islamic medical scholars.
