Abstract:

The claim that liberal democracy is the end of history has recently been challenged by practical events in the areas of religion, language, culture, politics of idendity and recognition etc. Accordingly, since traditional liberal democracy can’t cope with postmodern pluralism, some outstanding thinkers have started to propose that liberal democracy should be entitled to give answers to new conditions , Of these philosophers, Mouffe maintains a radical democracy which is against the universalistic essence of liberalism that ignores the differences and welcomes rational consensus. For her, we/they tension is an ineradicable fact. Differences and antagonism are at the hear of politics. The incompatibility of the ethical and the political is the democratic paradox. Mouffe’s thesis is to reduce big problems to the conflicts between adversaries by accepting differences will be more reasonable than to cause an uncontrolled war of all against all just because of negation of differences. With these kind of be areble disagreements at hand, therefore, it is possible for democratic societies to be able to endure its energy and prevent this energy from exploding unexpectedly as a result of being suppressed. Mouffe suggests that dominant politics is deficient because it has failed to make the telos above real and develops her theory by using poststructalist and postmodern concepts such as anti-essentialism, anti-foundationalism, perspectivism, deconstruction, ineradicability of differences, the lack of transcendent sources of legitimacy deferral of meaning.

After focusing on her poststructualist and postmodern ‘foundations’, I will allege that Mouffe’s efforts to solve the problems of differences/pluralism/the other which have been exaggerated are in vain. I do believe the place of her exploration is wrong, which is deep inside the cave. Additionally, what is more problematic is that this sort of search causes us to forget the fact that we are in the cave by means of various doxas such as freedom, pluralism, anti-truth, anti essentialism. İn my opinion, the obssesion with the idea of liquid truth has no positive role to hold differences together.
