Abstract:

Sufism as vision strives for the experiential disclosure of the true nature of reality, both outwardly and inwardly. As such, it seeks to disclose human beings’ true, but hidden, luminous nature and to make use of their (for the most part neglected) positive energies in order to discern truth as truth and falsehood as falsehood, and to work toward overcoming falsehood and injustice while enabling truth to reign based on the inward certainty such vision makes possible. As love - that is, love in the sense of the root of existence - Sufism represents a pivotal, and practical, point of attraction for human beings blinded by hatred, bitterness and disagreement over things which are, in essence, nothing but mirages and shadows. Such a practical point of attraction possesses the potential to bring about liberation from the negative energies that lead to nothing but ruin and destruction, its purpose being to invest the positive energy of love, which has the capacity to revitalize human beings' spiritual potential and bring them the happiness they seek. As discourse, Sufism is called upon to develop and improve its ‘rhetorical strategy’ and to address people in ways that are consistent with their levels of understanding and potentials. At the same time, it needs to ponder the ways in which it can emerge from the narrow circle of its adherents so as to reach broader, more inclusive horizons. To this end, it needs to establish a universal discourse capable of addressing the spiritual dimension of human beings' lives and experience.
