Abstract:

The principle of treating others as one wishes to be treated, commonly referred to as the golden rule of ethics, is a widely recognized standard across various cultures and historical epochs. This principle provides numerous advantages regarding the efficacy of moral frameworks. By prompting individuals to consider the emotions and viewpoints of others, the golden rule fosters the cultivation of empathy, enhances interpersonal relationships, and encourages a culture of kindness. Among the many rules that apply in social relationships, it is important to recognize the expectation of reciprocity in this principle. Despite extensive research on both the golden rule and moral development separately, no study has been detected that specifically examines how individuals adopt this principle with varying motivations across developmental stages. This study theoretically analyses the golden rule from a psycho-developmental perspective, exploring how it functions within moral development frameworks. The journey of moral development typically transitions from self-centeredness to altruism. Initially, moral actions are largely driven by self-interest; however, as moral character evolves, altruistic motivations that exist independently of the expectation of reciprocation become increasingly significant. In this context, the main conclusion of the study is that the emphasis on empathy inherent in the Golden Rule is more applicable to individuals and communities that have reached a higher level of moral maturity, whereas those who are less morally developed tend to focus more on reciprocity.
