Abstract:

The supreme goal of the supervisors’ tasks - however, varied and numerous - was to support the treasury and increase the income of the Romanian administration from Egypt. The supervisors’ tasks were many and diverse, and the work of banks was one of these tasks that the supervisors’ work extended to as a result of the expansion of the system of compulsory services, and we have bank supervisors (ἐπιτηρηταὶ τραπέζης) in many papyri. This study aims to shed light on the role played by bank supervisors in relation to the subject of loans and related lending or repayment, or seizure of property against loan guarantee, or sale of such property as a result of not paying the debt on time, as well as the role of these supervisors in paying dowries and wages for nursing, as well as exploring the role of supervisors in the process of debt collection for strangers and the importance of this role in collecting outstanding loans after the debtors left their villages and migrated abroad. This study revealed a number of observations, the most important of which are: •	Bank supervisors played an important role in financial transactions related to loans. •	The bank supervisors were responsible for performing mandatory services in financial transactions. •	The bank supervisors were either supervising the banks or running the banks’ business, and there is no doubt that these banks were state banks and not private banks. •	The documents relating to bank supervisors are confined to the second half of the second century AD, as the beginning of the appearance of supervisors, in general, was from the reign of Emperor Trajan as part of the reform of the tax collection system especially craft taxes. •	However, the clear decrease in the number of people who were fit for compulsory service led to the expansion of their work scope to include everything related to income. •	The process of registering strangers helped ease the tax and debt process. •	Supervisors of outsiders’ taxes played an important role in debt collection.
