Abstract:

The colors encompassing the whole aspects of human life are interpreted according to lifestyle and worldview of humans. The purpose of this study is to determine the semantic values and frequency of use of the colors used in The Alip Manas, the heroic epic of the Altai Turks. For this purpose, the colors in The Alip Manas has been analyzed by means of documentary scan technique based on Metin Ergun’s work called “Alip Manas, The Heroic Epic of Altay Turks”, published by the Ministry of Culture Publications in 1998. It has been determined that eight colors, white, black, yellow, green, red, white grey, silver grey and bronze are used in The Alip Manas epic. It is seen that the most frequently used color is white grey (fifty one times). It is seen that White (42 times), black (29 times), yellow (15 times), silver grey (13 times), red (13 times), green (3 times) and bronze (1 times) are used in The Alip Manas. It has been determined that the words agar- and sarar-, which are colors derived from the colors except black, are used in a negative sense, while others are used in a positive sense. More frequently using of colors of positive sense than colors of negative sense shows that The Alip Manas is an epic creating positive impressions. Folk narratives like epics, tales and folk tales reflect the common memory of a socity, hence common culturel codes of societies, their lifestyles and perceptions of life are seen in this kind of Works. Making the texts in Turkish textbooks built with these codes, might be an appropriate approac in order to transfer cultural codes to generations, as well as colors.
