Abstract:

As an academic discipline, contemporary animal ethics has been dominated by utilitarian and deontologicalrights-based approaches ever since its emergence in the 1970s. However, these approaches have also been criticised by many for their inadequacy in justly solving the problems regarding our treatment of animals. In this study, I will examine critiques of utilitarian and deontological approaches in animal ethics from the perspective of the feminist care tradition and evaluate their similarities and shortcomings. I will identfy the common characteristics of these seemingly opposed views as 1 insisting on excluding emotions from our moral judgments, 2 viewing our relationship with animals primarily as one of conflict and focusing solely on our negative duties towards them, 3 grounding our duties towards animals on our shared qualities, and 4 favoring universal, abstract moral principles over contextuality. I will respectively compare these characteristics with care-based alternatives and demonstrate how a care-based approach in animal ethics offers more favorable solutions to our problems in animal ethics.
