Abstract:

This study is conducted to determine the factors affecting migration from rural areas towards cities in Samsun. For this purpose, citizens residing in the village and village households that have migrated were compared in terms of age, population, education, income sources and assets. The data required for this study were obtained through a survey which is conducted in 8 towns, 32 villages and 256 dwellings. The results revealed that the average age of heads of households are 43 for migrated citizens and 52 for the residents of villages. Average household population is 4,44 for migrated citizens while it is 5,46 for residents of village. Education level of migrated citizens is higher. Non-agricultural income, buildings, tools, machinery, land and animal assets of residents of the village households are more than migrating households. Households living in villages have 3,6 hectares of land while migrated households have 1,0 hectare. In order to reduce migration rate of young people, living standards should be improved and the activities to increase the income level of people living in the village should be focused on.
