Abstract:
This paper addresses the problematic issue of identity among young Algerians. It attempts to understand their perceptions and the strategies they adopted to cope with the forces of change. This might be achieved through reconstructing their identity or building new one in accordance to the requirements of the era. Such process takes place under the effects of many internal and external factors. These include among others education and youth-oriented state policies, as well as globalization and modernity in their various manifestations. Especially the impact of the technological revolution in the world of social media and communication. The latter have helped young people to develop awareness of their identity, and learn how to preserve it in light of structural changes taking place in the Algerian society. All this happens within a social process caracterised by the youths’ desire to live in a modern society that adheres to technical and scientific development, while maintaining in the same time the cultural specificities and national identity. No doubt, Identity is one of the most interesting topics in sociological studies, especially in recent times. It is an expression of cultural and social awareness, whether among individuals, groups, or society as a whole. It is also the subject of multiple and diverse influences to which it is exposed be that in the form of opportunities available to social actors. Or because of the pressures and constraints they face given social transformation and cultural change; including the clash of values resulting from interaction and confrontation between the requirements of authenticity and tradition on the one hand, and the impact of globalisation and modernity on the other. Such problematic issues related to the topic of identity will be addressed using data from a field study conducted on a sample of 200 Algerian youths. Focus will be particularly placed on two of the most fundamental elements of identity in Algerian society; language and religion. It is also interesting to explore the moving boundaries of identity in relation to globalization and modernity in the youths’ perceptions. The paper aims to answer a range of questions including; Can Algerian youth preserve their identity amidst the process of change in society and given the impact of globalisation and modernity? Is the relationship of identity to globalisation the same as that of identity to modernity? Can young people reshape their identity on the basis of cultural values and particularisms characterising Algerian society? will they be forced into building new identity in response to the requirements of modernity and globalisation? Or will they succeed in marrying the two together in a harmonious way.
