Abstract:

The book of Dede Korkut is one of the fundamental works of Turkish literature. Turkish root, spirit, nature, moral values and traditions are expressed with nice and plain though sophisticated language in this humanist work. The work is the natural product of the turkish nation’s historical and literary existence and was shaped in oral tradition through the centuries. And the theme of the works is Turkish Oguz tribes. The main topics of Turkish cosmology and mythology such as animal symbolism, “kam” tradition, the tree of life, colour symbolism and etc., are often seen in the work. Being indispensable themes of Turkish culture, have been studied in Turkish art with great enthusiasm since the earliest periods. The work has been influential in written tradition as well, like an alphabet of Turkism. Also as a cultural event Dede Korkut has been a source of inspiration for the artists and has had reflection on plastic arts. The works which we can see in the article as examples, display the internal relations of visual arts with oral and written tradition.
