Abstract:

In this study, the political history of the Mali Empire, which ruled in the territory of Bilad al-Sudan, was described; and it covered the period between its foundation and the year 1400. The foundation of the empire was described through the Epic of Sundiata, and the events that the founder Sundiata lived through were referred to, also the question of how Mali became a political union was tried to be answered. Thanks to the historical records conveyed by Ibn Khaldun, the political activities of the mansas who ruled Mali were mentioned in chronological order and the development of the empire was summarized. Referring to the pilgrimage experiences of Mansa Musa, one of the prominent leaders in the history of Mali, what he did for his country after this pilgrimage journey was discussed. The famous world traveler Ibn Battuta, who visited Mali in the years 1252 and 1253, tried to analyze how the empire began to decline by taking into account the political intrigues he witnessed in the Mali palace during the reign of Mansa Sulayman. Due to the limited information about the dissolution period of the empire, this study was ended with Mahmud, the last mansa mentioned by Ibn Khaldun.
