Abstract:

The most common disorders of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) problems is disc dislocation with reduction and is a common problem in the population. Joint sounds and pain symptoms in disc dislocation with reduction may not be eliminated by adjusting occlusal contacts and increasing the vertical dimension together with the stabilization plates used routinely. In these cases, if the symptoms cannot be relieved, anterior repositioned plates (ARP) can be used. The point where the pain in TMJ decreases and joint sounds are not heard is determined and the mandible is positioned at minimum protrusion. In this way, ARPs reduce the force on retrodiscal structures and allow the relief of pain and regeneration of these tissues. At the same time, a new and more stable condyle-disc relationship can be created by enabling the condyle to catch the disc. However, asymptomatic joint sounds continue as the condyle functions on adapted retrodiscal structures. As a result of ARP treatment, it has been observed that voice types change more positively, even if joint sounds do not disappear completely. The aim of this review is to reveal the effects of ARP on the elimination of joint sounds and pain symptoms in the reduction of disc dislocation and the duration of use under the light of previous studies.
