Abstract:

Knidos is an important Carian city located in the southwest of Anatolia, at the tip of the Datça peninsula. Theater Street is one of the seven north-south streets that perpendicularly cut the main street east-west direction of the city, which was arranged in accordance with the grid plan. This article focuses on cooking utensils for daily use that were found in this area as a result of excavations and research, which is the continuation of Theater Street and also includes the western wall of the Small Theater analemma. Pot, casserole-pottery and pan forms from the examined cooking utensils were discussed. Cookware similar to those found in Knidos has a very common usage area in the Eastern Mediterranean centres The examples in these centres are very similar in form, but they are dated to an earlier period. Considering the context of the finds as well as the similar ones of Knidos cooking pots, it is considered to be between the 4th and 6th centuries AD. It is dated to the century. The earliest examples of these examined are dated to the beginning of the 4th century AD and the latest to the end of the 6th century AD. The evaluated Knidos cookware is among the African and Aegean cookware. Some of the Knidos cookware consists of local and some imported forms. The closeness of the content, colours and textures used in the clays of locally produced forms with the materials from the local workshops of Knidos is clearly observed. With this study, comprehensive information will be given about the forms, functions and areas of use of the cooking pots identified from the west of the Knidos Small Theater, especially from the Late Antique period context. The connection between the cooking pots for daily use and necessity, found in the west of the Knidos Small Theater, with the spaces that make up the Late Antique period complex will also be detailed.
