Abstract:

This article examines the activities of a nationalist Ukrainian Committee established in Istanbul where was under the occupation of the Allies in 1921 within the framework of the organizations statue, program and declaration. The Committee founded by a group of Ukrainian nationalist refugees had the ultimate goal of overthrowing the Ukrainian Soviet government and establishing a national Ukrainian state. Its mission was to unite the scattered Ukrainian national organizations operating with similar goals. There is no information that the Committee was the continuation of the Union for the Liberation of Ukraine, which was also established in Istanbul, and that it had organic ties with other nationalist Ukrainian organizations operating in Europe. It can be said that the purpose of getting the support of the representatives of the Allied Powers played major role in the Committees selection of Istanbul as the center. It is understood that the Committee received the support of the occupation forces in Istanbul because of its anti-Bolshevist rhetoric and nationalist ideology. The Committee followed a propaganda policy aimed at drawing the attention of the European public to the Ukraine problem. For this purpose, The Commitee published a magazine called La Libre Ukraine in French language and made attempts to get support from the League of Nations.
