Abstract:

The recent history of Syria is a period shaped by political turmoil and coups. Although this turbulent past is frequently examined in academic research, it has not been sufficiently addressed in the field of literature. Hani al-Rahibs novel, al-Waba, is a work that significantly fills this gap. The novel highlights Syrias modern history, spanning from the departure of the Ottoman Empire from the region up until the 1980s. The article not only reflects political events but also reveals the daily lives of various segments of society and how these lives were affected by the political atmosphere. Through his characters, the author narrates the perception of women in the traditional social structure and how this perception has changed over time through dialogues. In addition, the corrupt practices of officials in dictatorial regimes and the oppressive methods of intelligence forces are also included. In this study, Hani al-Rahibs life, works, and position in Arab literature will be examined; the literary value and importance of al-Waba will be analyzed in depth. While the novels main characters, setting, time frame, the authors style, and storytelling techniques are evaluated, topics such as the female theme and the womans place in society will also be focused on. Moreover, the impact of religion on daily life in Syrian society will be discussed through the characters behaviors.
