Abstract:

A 52 Individual and bulk selection (with four intensities)that were handled under free soil (in addition to remant stored original seeds) and sister seed lots, from the same Cairo 25 variety of faba bean from Orobanche infested plots were evaluated under Orobanche infestation. individual selections differed from bulks significantly in two characters and bulk selections differed from unselected bulk in only one character. Materials from free field and evaluated under Orobanche stress did not show any improvement of selections for plant height compared to the base population (stored in cold room). But 25% of individual selections and none of selected bulks had significantly heavier plant dry weight and more branches than base population. Also 20% of individual selections and no bulks had higher pods/plant, 35% selections and 25% bulks had more seeds, 45% of selections and 25% of bulks significantly outyielded the base population. 45% of selections and none of bulks had significantly heavier seed index than original Cairo 25. The materials selected and evaluated under Orobanche stress showed individual vs. bulk selections to vary in four characters and selected bulks differed from unselected one in two characters. The original Cairo 25 was inferior to 60% of selections (and no bulks) in plant height, to 25% of selections andno bulks in plant dry weight, to 5% of selections and no bulks in branches/plant, to 20% individual selections and none of bulks in pods/plant and seeds/plant, to 70% of selections and 50% of bulks in seed yield/plant and to 80% of selections and 75% of bulks in seed index. Individual plant selection was more effective than bulk selection in Cairo 25. Materials grown under free and evaluated next season under Orobanche had better performance than sister material grown and evaluated under Orobanche stress. This may be due to performance potential being affected under stress than free condition that favors better performance potential.
