Abstract:

The city of Izmit, located at one of the strategic transition points of the Anatolian geography and where many commercial routes approach from both the coast and land, was one of the most important stops of the Silk Road in the 16th century. Focusing on the Pertev Pasha Complex built by Mimar Sinan during the Ottoman Period, which Evliya Çelebi mentioned in his travelogues, the study focuses on the historical context of the complex and how this focal point is perceived in todays city and its current role in the texture. The study aims to examine chronologically, through urban planning decisions, the transformation of the Pertev Pasha Social Complex, which was a range complex on the caravan route, into a singular worship structure called the Yeni Cuma Mosque today, and will also make visible the parts it contained at the time it was built and the spatial relationship between them. The mosque structure, which continues to be just a landmark today, is located in the city as traces of ruins, as a result of the buildings within the social complex being damaged one by one at different times and this loss of identity being ignored in current planning decisions and urban practice. The translation of the name Pertev Pasha Mosque and Social Complex, which is the name of the social complex and which we can define as one of the most important elements of identity, as New Friday Mosque, constitutes the most important factor in the loss of its place in the urban context. The aim of this study is to emphasize the importance of being able to analyze cities like Anatolia, which have multi-layered and unique identity values, with multiple and transversal readings in order to eliminate the loss of urban identity, which is frequently encountered in our country, instead of dressing cities with identities far from their own contexts and completely erasing the memory of the city with popular design moves from the top. At the same time, by revealing the historical significance of the complex and thus understanding its current role within the complex fabric of the urban fabric, it offers suggestions that will guide urban design decisions and potential interventions to be taken regarding the preservation and revitalization of this cultural node.
