Abstract:

Gravestones, which are important material cultural assets of cultural heritage, also represent the identity of a nation. Gevaş Seljuk Cemetery is an important component of the cultural heritage of Anatolias most important Turkish-Islamic period. The rich ornamentation program on the tombstones in the Gevaş Seljuk Cemetery is quite remarkable. The decorations on sample tombstones dating back to the early Turkish-Islamic art period were evaluated from many aspects in this study. The rich variety of decorative elements on the gravestones has become the most important distinguishing feature that distinguishes the cemetery from other cemeteries. In addition to unique geometric and floral decorations, hoops, rosettes, rosettes, passionflowers, oil lamps and candlestick motifs, chavgan and sunburst motifs with salbeks were also found on the tombstones. The ornamental elements integrated with the historical texture on the tombstones have become an important source of Anatolian Turkish Islamic ornamentation art. In addition to being a centuries-old cultural identity, the well-deserved decoration on gravestones reflects the values of the society and the point of handicraft skills. Apart from the decorative elements used, sample gravestones were also examined in terms of typological features, materials, techniques and inscriptions. Gravestones, in addition to being a historical and cultural identity dating back centuries, are also documents that ensure our belonging to Anatolia. In this context, five 5 decorated tombstones in the Gevaş Seljuk Cemetery were evaluated from many aspects.
