Abstract:

In Eric Faye’s narrative imagination, travel is a core element visible in the processes and sources of narration. The contemporary French writer draws inspiration from his travels in Asia and his mobility within France to construct romantic works in which the journey is a performance by the characters. The author takes care to describe the fictional wanderings of his actors without putting his own personality in the spotlight, as is done in the classic travel story. In this sense, Éric Faye innovates the novelistic genre by adopting various modalities of travel ranging from travel stories to story journeys combined with the imagination of travel and imaginary travel. Each modal variable finds its pragmatic expression in the writer’s novels. This contribution is based on the postulate that for the French novelist, travel is explored through story and imagination. The objective is to establish the places of convergence of these modes by carrying out systematic differentiation using theories of textuality and imagination.
