Abstract:

This study aims to explore the concept of death and its expressions in two levels of vocabulary and structure of Nizar Qabbani's Poetry . Additionally, how these expressions point to the attitude of the poet toward the meaning of demise, absence, silence, surrender, revolt, verity, subjugation, unfairness, and innocence, among others.
The current study tracked the semantic field of death, including the expressions of killing, homicide, hanging, martyrdom, burial, crucifixion, dying and others, as well as expressions indirectly associated with death such as “tomb”, “coffin”, “cemetery”, “shroud”, “skulls”, “blood” and, “crown of roses”. This is to identify the poet's conceptions of death, as well as the ways in which he links his expressive structures with conceptual references .
The study found that he has numerous, overlapping, and at times contradictory concepts of death. He dealt with death in love, giving love the meaning of rebellion, confrontation, demise of passion, immortality, and an adventurous and bold resolution. Death is used to indicate wilting passion, weak sentiment, intense boredom, and betrayal.
He talked about death for writing, exploring the idea that the poet may die in order to live the words of his/her poem. That is to say, poetry is a difficult product that may lead the writer to death, not luxury.
He spoke on the death of Arabic women to change their reality, break their silence, and to achieve their freedom.
Death also emerged in criticism of the Arab street, and its acts of ignorance, treason, confiscation of freedom and the tyranny of rulers. In addition, he talked about the death of Arabic cities during civil wars and sectarian strife, as in his description of Beirut. The death of Arabic people for their homelands and freedom was of particular cultural and historical importance, as opposed to the death of the enemies of Arab nation.
With regard to real death, it was followed by rebellion, denial, surrender, crying, confusion, accusation, and screaming. This was found in poems talking about the death of the poet's father, mother, wife, and son.
