Abstract:

Esat Mahmut Karakurts first world tour in 1949, undertaken on behalf of the Yeni Sabah newspaper, made a significant contribution to the travel writing tradition of the period. This journey, encompassing a vast geography including countries such as India, the United States, Japan, Senegal, Portugal, and Spain, stands out as a modern travelogue shaped by Karakurts observations and experiences. The intriguing events and encounters with individuals he experienced during his travels added vitality to his narrative and provided unique insights into these regions. Among the elements distinguishing Karakurts style are his observations on cultural differences, interactions with the local populace, and attention to geographical details in the places he visited. The narrative and content of his writings are particularly noteworthy for reflecting the global political outlook of the era. Furthermore, Karakurts effort to convey Turkeys modernization endeavors and the impact of Atatürks reformsillustrated through details such as reports about him in the foreign pressoffer significant information on the historical and sociological context of the period. In these travel writings, the author employed a broad range of narrative techniques, from romantic descriptions to humorous elements and dialogues. This approach not only enhanced the literary qualities of his works but also served to vividly present the world of that era to his readers. This series of writings demonstrates that Karakurts literary success was not confined to his identity as a novelist and journalist but extended to offering Turkish readers an original perspective on the external world. This article aims to contribute to Karakurts biography and introduce these travel writings to the literary world by examining the socio-cultural and literary characteristics of his grand world tour for the Yeni Sabah newspaper, focusing on its main themes and stylistic features.
