Abstract:

 Objective: to determine the impact of chronic liver disease assessed by different liver function tests on Insulin Growth Factor 1 (IGF-1). Design: Case-control study. 
Setting: outpatient clinic and inpatient ward of the geriatric department. 
Participants: 60 elderly (30 controls and 30 cases with chronic liver disease) all above 60 years of age. 
Measurements: All participants underwent comprehensive geriatric assessment, of the following laboratory measurements (IGF-1, total proteins, serum albumin, Aspartate Transaminase (AST), Alanine Transaminase (ALT), total and direct bilirubin, Prothrombin Time (PT), fasting and 2 hours postprandial blood glucose, blood urea, and serum creatinine) and abdominal ultrasound. 
Results: Cases with chronic liver disease had highly significant low IGF-1 levels in the serum when compared to controls (P < 0.001). Serum albumin was found to be positively correlated to IGF-1 level (p < 0.01) but no other correlations were found between IGF-1 and serum levels of AST or ALT or PT or bilirubin. 
Conclusion: IGF-1 is markedly lowered in elderly with chronic liver disease.
