Abstract:

The city of Jerusalem is a city that should be handled within the scope of shaping human history and intervening in this formation of religions. The importance of Bayt al-Maqdis for Judaism, Christianity and Islam has formed the basis for being a field of interfaith struggle. The Crusades, the most important and wide-ranging series of events of the Middle Ages, were shaped with the aim of saving Jerusalem from Muslims at the beginning. The European Christian World has come up with the idea of saving Jerusalem in order to direct its own internal dynamics, inadequate lands and sending the surplus nobles to the East. The European Christian World welcomed this with great joy when Jerusalem was conquered at the hands of the Crusaders during the first Crusade, which was mobilised in 1096. While taking Bayt al-Maqdis from Muslims and establishing a Crusader state in the region added new actors to the regional politics in the context of the Crusader factor; the passing of Jerusalem to the Christians has shown how precious it is to save the holy in the European imagination. The political strengthening of the Muslims in the region and the liberation of Bayt al-Maqdis on the hands of Salah al-Din (1187) caused the Crusaders to repeat the discourse of saving Jerusalem. The re-conquest of Bayt al-Maqdis from the Crusader domination was seen as a major disaster in the European World. The calls for this was manifested as the recovery of the humiliated Christian honour rather than the rhetoric of saving a city. This study discusses how the idea of saving Jerusalem after 1187 was embedded in the European Crusader mentality in the light of the sources. In addition, this study shows how the sanctity of Jerusalem was reinforced by anti-Islamic rhetoric in the Crusader imagination. In conclusion it has been determined that at the point emphasised on the basis of the "Save Jerusalem" discourse, the war of prophets was fuelled and this was handled dominantly by orientalist studies.

1096 yılında seferberlik olunan I. Haçlı seferinde Kudüs Müslümanların elinden alınarak Haçlıların eline geçtiğinde Avrupa Hristiyan dünyası bunu büyük bir sevinçle karşılamıştır.
