Abstract:

Peygamber'in (s.a.v.) şahsında insanlığa yöneltmiş olduğu ilk emrinin hemen ardından insanın alaktan yaratılışına dikkat çekilmesi son derece anlamlıdır. Hz.

Allah Almighty has manifested the value He placed on human beings by giving them abundant worldly and spiritual endowments, by creating other elements in a way that they can benefit from, and without doubt, by elevating them to the position of an honourable addressee. The order “read” (in Arabic iqraʾ) is the first address of the Qurʾān, which is the last and eternal message to human beings, whom Allah Almighty greatly values and addresses, and the present study focuses on the nature of this order.
The Qurʾān is not a partial conversation between Almighty Allah and just one person about a particular event; it is an address given to all humanity beyond time and space, under the title of the Lord of the Universe. As His first decree in this address, Allah Almighty ordered human beings to read and to perform this act of reading in the name of the Lord, who created them. It is utterly meaningful that the Holy Qurʾān drew attention to human’s being created out of a clot, along with the first order given to humanity through the Holy Prophet. In addition to the fact that the Prophet did not attempt to learn literacy after the revelation of this verse for whatever reason, the emphasis placed on a verse about creation highlighting the creation from a clot, immediately after the order to read, suggests that this address may have other meanings. However, given that there a quite a few Quranic verses that invite humans to examine the verses about creation and to contemplate on them, besides the lofty goals that the Qurʾān wants to convey through such verses, it is possible to claim that the order “read” may have more than one aspect.
Furthermore, in terms of addressing the issue from a holistic perspective, analysing the duties assigned to the Prophet and the orders given to him could play a key role in appreciating the content of the first order mentioned above. This is because among the missions assigned to the Prophet in the Qurʾān is also an important responsibility that needs to be emphasized: reciting the verses of Allah Almighty for people. The act of reciting these verses mentioned in the Qurʾān, or its nature if the task is understood as the description of the Prophet, should not be mere recitation which involves only pronouncing the words of the verses. Among other related issues that need further examination are the purpose of the verses in question, how the Prophet recited them, along with the content and nature of this act of reciting.
On the other hand, the modern humans can reach the information they want on a variety of issues in today's world, in which the ways of gaining access to knowledge have expanded and become easier than ever before in history. However, as they do not know how to turn such large amounts of knowledge into accomplishments, all this information deluging their minds can hardly go beyond being a burden for themselves. Given the universality of the Qurʾān, this order must offer a lesson and a message for the current age in general, and for every individual in today's world in particular. Globally considered, it would be useful to examine the order “to read in the name of the Lord, who creates everything; that is, in the name of Allah,” within the framework provided above, and of course, in line with the interpretations of classical and contemporary commentaries on the issue. This is because such a study is of vital importance in terms of introducing what meanings may have been intended by this order, humans’ getting to know their creator and leading a life according to His will. In this study, the content of the order to read in the name of the Lord, who creates everything, was examined using two complementary methods. The first involves comparison in which commentators' related comments are comparatively examined, and the second involves the analysis of the examined interpretations by considering the context and different verses that may be related to the subject. The analyses carried out using these methods suggested that the order to read has deeper meanings beyond its literal one that first comes to mind. Therefore, it would be appropriate to deal with the order to read through an understanding which accepts that all the verses of the universe, which is the divine book of God Almighty, are included in this address, particularly the Qurʾān and other divine books that can be used, without limiting the content of this order to mere recitation.
