Abstract:

After both the Turkish raids before the Manzikert Victory (1071) and the heavy defeat in Manzikert (Malazgirt), the Byzantine Empire started to lose control in the eastern borders. As a result of this, the rulers who run local administration in the east of Anatolia were caught in the middle between the Byzantine Empire, which was still one of the most important powers of the region, and the Seljuks who determined the region as the new conquest area. On the one hand, while there was a severe struggle between these two powers, on the other hand, the local governors and administrators tried to follow a “balance policy” between these two powers in order not to lose their lands and resume their authority. This policy of the governors of Armenian origin, observed since the last quarter of the 11th century, shows itself in the sources of the period. While the Byzantine Empire was trying to continue its domination in the region, the Seljuk Turks also managed to subordinate these people by following an effective and expansionist policy in the region. During this period, some local Armenian rulers who wanted to keep their lands converted to Islam, while some used the title amir of Islamic state administration. Particularly three of these people, Philaretos Brachamios, Theodore Hetum (Toros) and Gabriel (Khoril) played an active role in the politics of the region. On the one hand, Philaretos appeared before the Seljuk sultan Malikshah and declared that he was a Muslim, on the other hand, Theodore and Gabriel used the title of order in their lead seals. This study aims to investigate this process in the light of contemporary written sources and seals.
