Abstract:

Yenisey Inscriptions which are among the important sources to learn the history of Turkic, gives important linguistic material for research on the lexicon of Old Turkic. One of the word-formation methods of great importance in the formation of lexicon is compounding. Compound words formed with this method are very common in modern Turkic. However, we do not see this commonness in the period of Old Turkic, especially in the Yenisey Inscriptions. There are very few constructions that can be characterized as compound words here. Nevertheless, here, a lot of constructions can be seen that are characterized as compound words by researchers, but do not own the characteristics of compound words, including depicting a whole meaning, becoming one in form, forming a lexical unit for its phonetic structure. These constructions may be called pseudo-compound words. Pseudo-compound words in the Yenisey Inscriptions will be looked through, their types called hendiadys, composite names, numeral phrases and compound verbs will be investigated in the article. Definition of each type, their usage, opinions of various researchers about them and the characteristics distinguishing them from the genuine compound words will be focused on. The examples of hendiadys, composite names, numeral phrases and compound verbs in the Yenisey Inscriptions and the lines that they were used will be given.
