Abstract:

Arabic poetry, which has the duty of preserving language, culture and knowledge and passing them on from generation to generation, has gained the status of being an Arab divan due to this vital quality. The best examples of Arabic poetry, which plays important social and political roles in addition to its cultural role, are seen in the poems written in Arabic by Osman Zeki Soyyiğit. Targeting the moral deterioration, religious insensitivity and self-centered approaches that have become widespread in society, Soyyiğit has been seen to be a writer with high social sensitivity with his poems in this sense. Criticizing this approach of neighboring Iran and Iraq, who have been engaged in a bloody war for many years, and calling on the parties to resolve their problems peacefully in the light of the provisions of the Quran, Soyyiğits poems in this context clearly indicate his sensitivity to political problems. As it has been pointed out, when we look at the other poems of Soyyiğit, who wrote poems with high social and political sensitivity, it is seen that he also wrote poems on other themes. In fact, when we look closely at his relevant poems -in terms of the themes they belong to-, it is seen that each of them has different themes. The themes in question are mostly the general themes of classical Arabic poetry, such as ghazal, eulogy, satire, honor, elegy, description and wisdom. Soyyiğit, who wrote very literary poems on these themes, has been widely accepted by literary circles for his expertise in this sense. Indeed, Soyyiğit, who won first place in a competition he participated in with a poem with a description theme called Harrâbul-kader, was seen to have written other poems with a high literary sensitivity. The aim of this study is to introduce a figure like Osman Zeki Soyyiğit, whose name is not widely heard in Turkish literary circles but who made important contributions to Arabic literature, to Turkish literary circles. This article, which focuses on Soyyiğit, who has not been studied in any academic sense, first provides a general overview of Arabic poetry, then touches upon Soyyiğits life and then thematic analysis of his poems.
