Abstract:

Qaṣeeda-i Ṭanṭarāniyyah of Muīnaddin Aḥmad b. Abdurrazzāq al-Ṭanṭarānī (d. 485/1092), one of the teachers in Niẓāmiya Madrasah, is among the poems respected by the men of letters. The poem offers unique representations of wordplay and double rhyme system. It was explained in Arabic, and translations and comments were made in Turkish and Persian languages. One of the translators of this work into Turkish is the late period Ottoman scholar Ibrahim b. Mohammed al-Yalvajī (d. 1293/1877). In translation, Yalvacî, who used the poetic form, meter and rhyme of the source text, could not show the success of the original text. He is flawed in terms of the rhythm, and more based on source text with regard to rhyme words. The author managed to translate some of the couplets by finding appropriate meanings; however, he could not do so in all parts of the work. In general, the words in the source work were directly transferred or small changes were made. Yalvajī could preserve the double rhythm of the original poem in some couplets, and made use of literature arts especially the wordplay. He preferred the conveying of the meaning rather than enriching the content. However, he modified the type of praising the target person, and thus the genre of the poem was changed. As a result, the poem which was originally a praise for a senior statesman became a naat. In the present study, the life and works of Yalvajī were introduced, his translation of Qaṣeeda-i Ṭanṭarāniyyah was evaluated, and transcribed text of the translation was given.

Nizâmiye Medresesi müderrislerinden Muîneddin Ahmed b. Abdürrezzâk et-Tantarânî’nin (öl. 485/1092) Kasîde-i Tantarâniyye isimli eseri, üdebâ arasında kıymet bulan manzumelerden biridir.
