Abstract:

Culture, as western concept, has gone through various layers of meaning and found its true meaning in the expression the lifestyle of society. With the process of enlightenment and modernization, the Western World developed a secular way of life and placed it on a material basis by separating culture from its metaphysical ties. While modernity, which faced some criticism after 1950, left its place to postmodernity, the concept of culture is also linked to the discourse of cultural pluralism in the direction of postmodern understanding. While there is a cultural period that has an equivalent in the Western World, the Muslim society has been trying to absolutize the traditional understanding of religion. By doing this it has alienated to existing conditions and failed to develop a lifestyle and culture. The problem has got worse although this unbalancing situation, which has arisen from imitating the tradition, is tried to overcome by imitating the Western World in some areas. The article is a descriptive research on the concept of culture. The historical background of the concept of culture, the cultural transformation in the Western World and the approach of the Muslim world to the concept of culture have been tried to be analyzed. The ability of the Muslim society to develop an alternative modernity depends on its cultural development. Muslim society adhered to theoretical designs in innovation movements and ignored the importance of culture. The study is important in that it draws attention to the importance of having a culture. The research identifies the distress that is felt but difficult to be defined as a cultural crisis. It concludes that overcoming the crisis can be achieved with the harmony between education, religious understanding and lifestyle.
