Abstract:

The request to establish and apply a clear mining policy in the European Community supported with the financial instruments as the equivalent of SYSMIN which is in force for the ACP Africa, Caraib and Pasif ic countries become intensified especially after the accession of Greece, Spain and Portugal. The Community is aware of the potential mining sector at lessening the degree of dependence imbalances especially in the member Mediterranean states and most importantly, as an integral part of the community industry, the commission believes that the mining sector deserves just as much attention as the other sectors of the improvement and reinforcement of the Community's economy. But this does not justifies the idea of establishing a special fund within the frame of a specific sectoral policy. The paper reviews the developments to set up a mining policy in the community since 1975 and outlines the resulted recommendations which will most possibly form the base for a Community mining policy.
