Abstract:

According to the Türk Dil Kurumu Güncel Sözlük the concept of addiction is dependent on the will, power or help of something else, having no freedom or autonomy, being subject to someone or something excessively materially or spiritually, such as cigarettes, drugs, etc. It is defined as being extremely fond of bad habits and addicted. The Cinderella complex, introduced to literature by Colette Dowling, expresses a womans fear of independence. Trying to explain various reasons why women feel this fear, Dowling suggests that the problem begins in childhood. Being always protected and learning that she is not responsible for her own life makes the existence of the other necessary for the woman. It is seen that the woman caught in the Cinderella complex does not recognize herself, cares about the happiness of others more than her own happiness, accepts being marginalized, clings to the role of the good woman, is dependent on the relationship rather than the person, and desires to live under a shell. It can be stated that Halide Edib Adıvar, who tried to create an ideal woman image in most of her novels, placed the main character Handan into the ideal woman mold in her novel Handan, published in 1912. Presenting Handan to the reader from different peoples perspectives makes it possible for the reader to get to know Handan from different perspectives. The fact that Handan is the ideal woman in terms of her personal development, but experiences fluctuations between the mind-heart-body trio in terms of love, forms the basis of the novel. Handans capture of the Cinderella complex occurs because of certain stages. In this study, the novel Handan will be subjected to a methodological analysis in the context of the Cinderella complex.
