 The traditional understanding of history in pre-modern societies was generally understood as the investigation of the activities of rulers and state officials. After the New Age, many antecedents interpreted the events that they listed chronologically in the form of national defense. According to the Annales school, all human activities cannot be considered because traditional historiography puts the political history aspect in the foreground. Therefore, the Annales school adopts a question and problem-centered, interdisciplinary understanding of history by applying social science methods to the science of history, instead of the traditional historical narrative. The aforementioned influence of the Annales school is high in todays historians in creating their studies by making use of the methods and analyzes of various social sciences. In this way, it is difficult to research the history of women in the Ottoman Empire, whose visibility in official documents is more limited compared to other research fields, within the traditional view of history. The present study is based on the question of whether the Annales tradition had an impact on Ottoman womens historiography. Publications on the history of Ottoman women in foreign languages in the 1970s and later emphasized the importance of studies based on registers, stating that the most important data source was the registers. Ottoman womens historiography has been tried to be created with rich sources published by authors such as Ronald C. Jennings, Haim Gerber, Abraham Marcus, Judit Tucker, Suraiya Faroqhi, and Turkish publications that work on registers by using these historical sources as a reference. It has been observed that the Annales tradition has an influence on the Ottoman womens historiography created with the literature written in Turkish and foreign languages after 1970. All kinds of experiences of women in private and public spheres have been tried to be revealed through publications created exclusively from the registers. In the works where the influence of the school was influenced, the fields of activity of Ottoman women, economic, social, political and religious life were examined in their unique conditions, and the neglected aspects of women in the traditional historical narrative were generally tried to be discussed with all their aspects. With this positive contribution, the authors made the place and roles of women in society more visible by addressing the neglected historical aspects of Ottoman women in the narratives of western travelers or orientalists in traditional historiography.

 Yeniçağ öncesi toplumlarındaki geleneksel tarih anlayışı umumiyetle, hükümdarların ve devlet yetkililerinin faaliyetlerinin tahkiye edilmesi olarak anlaşılmıştır. Yeniçağ sonrasında ise birçok müverrih zaman dizinsel olarak sıraladığı olayları ulus müdafaası biçiminde yorumlamıştır. Annales ekolüne göre geleneksel tarih yazımının siyasi tarih veçhesini ön plana almasından dolayı insan faaliyetlerinin tamamı mütalaa edilememektedir. Dolayısıyla Annales ekolü, geleneksel tarih anlatısı yerine, tarih bilimine sosyal bilimler yöntemlerini uygulayarak soru ve sorun merkezli, disiplinler arası bir tarih anlayışı benimsemektedir. Günümüzde tarihçilerin, muhtelif sosyal bilimlerin yöntem ve tahlillerinden istifade ederek çalışmalarını oluşturmalarında Annales ekolünün bahsi geçen tesiri yüksektir. Bu minvalde geleneksel tarih telakkisi içinde Osmanlıda diğer araştırma alanlarına kıyasla resmi vesikalarda görünürlükleri daha sınırlı olan kadınların tarihini araştırmak güçleşmektedir. Elimizdeki çalışma Annales geleneğinin Osmanlı kadın tarih yazımına tesiri olmuş mudur sorusundan hareketle kaleme alınmıştır. Osmanlı kadınlarının tarihi ile ilgili 1970li yıllar ve sonrasında yabancı dilde çıkarılan yayınlar, en önemli veri kaynağının siciller olduğunu belirterek bu belgelere dayalı çalışmaların önemi üzerinde durmuşlardır. Osmanlı kadın tarih yazımı Ronald C. Jennings, Haim Gerber, Abraham Marcus, Judit Tucker, Suraiya Faroqhı gibi yazarların neşrettikleri zengin kaynaklar ve bu tarihi kaynakları da bir referans olarak kullanarak sicillere dayalı çalışmalar yapan Türkçe yayınlar ile ihdas edilmeye çalışılmıştır. 1970 ve sonrası Türkçe ve yabancı dilde yazılan literatür ile oluşturulan Osmanlı kadın tarih yazımında, Annales geleneğinin tesiri olduğu görülmüştür. Münhasıran sicillerden yola çıkılarak oluşturulan yayınlarla kadınların özel ve kamusal alanlardaki her türlü deneyimleri ortaya çıkarılmaya çalışılmıştır. Ekolün etkisinin olduğu eserlerde, Osmanlı kadınlarının faaliyet alanları iktisadi, içtimai, siyasi, dini yaşamı kendine özgü koşullarında irdelenmiş, kadınların geleneksel tarih anlatısı içinde ihmal edilmiş yönleri umumiyetle bütün veçheleriyle ele alınmaya gayret edilmiştir. Bu müspet katkıyla müellifler, geleneksel tarih yazımında batılı seyyah veya oryantalistlerin anlatılarında Osmanlı kadınlarının ihmal edilen tarihi yönlerini de ele alarak kadınların toplum içindeki yerlerini, rollerini daha görünür hale getirmişlerdir.
